Character: Avalkis

avalkis1    avalkis2

Avalkis is an animal with the features of a deer and a dragon from my Springbringer fantasy world. The first sketch was drawn in a forest. I often find animals, creatures and beings in tree branches, stumps, leaves, clouds, puddles of waterin the fractals of nature and other random visual formations.

The colored one is is a pastel drawing. This is kind of a self-portrait in a way and my alias is Avalkis which I’m using as an artist name in certain publications such as music.

Drawing: Where Is the Roof? (1998)

whereistheroof1998

An eye sees a stream of beings and things. The hand in bottom center is curiously inspired by A Clockwork Orange. It is trying to turn the letter ‘A’ back to upwards. I signed as Psychic back in this time.

In the late 1990s I became interested in psychedelic visuals and began to draw in such style. “Where Is the Roof?” is the first finalized drawing of this era. This style still manifests itself occasionally in my Narcosis the Cat Meets the Flapsticks comic books and strips.

Comic: Narcosis the Cat goes Sci-Fi – 2010

“Narcosis the Cat is 5 billion years old. She is already very old and tired…”

“Yet Narcosis the Cat always reincarnates again!”

A spoof on Kubrick‘s 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) which is my all-time favorite film in addition to f.ex. Tarkovsky‘s Stalker (1979). I love the scene in 2001 with the light white room and the stargate preceding it. It really feels like entering a whole new another world and universe.

Apokryfia sketch book series 2009–

books2-2016-flat

Here are my Apokryfia sketch books where this website and blog were originally inspired from and based on. This is where my artistic ideas often derive from.

These are the first 10 books (3.4.2009 – 26.12.2011) and I’m currently (September 2016) on the 13th book. There are currently over 1500 pages of sketches and illustrations.

The books are named after the Greek alphabet from Alpha to Omega. The vignette symbols make some kind of reference in the contents of each book. There is also a box carrying the first 12 issues.

Etching: A Stream of Mirages (2006)

etsaus1

Etching 24×12 cm (Kangastusten virta in Finnish). 6 made with varying colors (some are black and white). This scene is from an upcoming Narcosis the Cat Meets the Flapsticks comic book story Flapsticks in the Land of the Pyramids. It tells about the legend of a Horse of the Troika three giant horses worshipped by the people of Ee-Gypt.

In this artwork the birds from top center gradually transform into mountains and finally as flying dragons. The labyrinth on top right symbolizes the sun. “Corner sun” is my favorite motif in naive works.

Labyrinths and dungeons are one of my favorite themes  both in real life. We like to find caves and tunnels and wander in them with my friend Kriku who also does f.ex. psychedelic art.
